- Mountain resort set to attract 700,000 visitors and 7,000 residents in wider area
- PIF-owned company to contribute to regional tourism sector under Vision 2030 goals
- TROJENA expects to create more than 10,000 jobs and add $800 million to the Kingdom's economy
Saudi Arabia's giga-project NEOM today announced the launch of TROJENA, a mountain resort offering outdoor skiing in a region more commonly associated with sandy desert plains.
The development, located 50km from the Gulf of Aqaba coast in the west of the Kingdom, is expected to attract 700,000 visitors and 7,000 permanent residents in the wider area by 2030.
TROJENA is envisioned as a year-round tourist destination, with a snowy ski village during the winter months, as well as watersports, mountain biking, and an interactive nature reserve. Set for completion by 2026, the resort also promises cultural festivals, ultra-luxury wellness resorts, and restaurants.
The 60-square-kilometer development is expected to contribute to Saudi Arabia's goal, under its Vision 2030 reform plan, to attract 100 million local and international tourism visits by 2030. It is also in line with the aim of the Public Investment Fund, which owns NEOM, to grow the Kingdom's entertainment, leisure, and sports industry.
The establishment of Trojena was announced by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman Al-Saud, Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the Council of Economic and Development Affairs, Chairman of PIF, and Chairman of the NEOM Company Board of Directors.
“TROJENA will redefine mountain tourism for the world by creating a place based on the principles of ecotourism, highlighting our efforts to preserve nature and enhance the community's quality of life, which is aligned with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030. It also confirms our commitment to be part of the global effort to protect the environment," His Royal Highness said.
“TROJENA will be an important addition to tourism in the region, a unique example of how Saudi Arabia is creating destinations based on its geographical and environmental diversity. This forward-looking vision will ensure that mountain tourism will be another revenue stream to support the Kingdom's economic diversification while still preserving its natural resources for future generations."
Nadhmi Al-Nasr, chief executive of NEOM, commented: “TROJENA represents NEOM's values and bold plans as a land where nature and innovative technologies come together to form a unique global experience. This new development is a major contribution to achieving NEOM's long-term ambitions by adhering to the principles of sustainability and utilizing state-of-the-art technology and engineering, across various disciplines, to make NEOM an all-round and attractive world-class destination."
